West Shed

WEST SHED – Midland Railway Centre - Butterley, Swanwick Junction

WEST SHED is one of the principal exhibition and restoration buildings at the Midland Railway Centre (MRC) - Butterley, located at Swanwick Junction in Derbyshire. It plays a vital role in the preservation, storage, and presentation of historic railway locomotives and rolling stock, offering visitors a unique insight into railway heritage and engineering. The exhibition space is managed by a full time curator Sacha Springthorpe, whose work helps interpret the collection and present the stories behind the locomotives and vehicles on display, enhancing visitors’ understanding of the region’s rich railway history.

Location

WEST SHED is situated within the Swanwick Junction site of the Midland Railway Centre - Butterley, near Ripley in Derbyshire. It stands alongside other historic railway buildings and is positioned close to the main running lines, giving visitors excellent views of both working locomotives and restoration projects.

Purpose and Function

The building serves as a combined museum and workshop space. Its primary roles include:

  • Housing preserved steam locomotives and historic rolling stock
  • Providing covered accommodation to protect rolling stock from the weather
  • Acting as a working restoration and maintenance facility
  • Offering the public a view of ongoing engineering and conservation work

History of WEST SHED

WEST SHED was developed as part of the Midland Railway - Butterley Centre’s long-term plan to improve storage and exhibition facilities for its growing collection. Designed in the style of traditional railway engine sheds, it reflects the industrial character of heritage railway infrastructure while providing modern facilities for preservation work.

Inside WEST SHED

Visitors entering WEST SHED can expect to see a wide variety of historic railway artefacts and rolling stock, including:

  • Preserved LMS and BR steam locomotives
  • Historic coaching stock and specialist rolling stock
  • Engineering displays, tools, and restoration projects in progress
  • Interpretation boards explaining the history of the railway and its equipment

Educational and Heritage Role

WEST SHED plays an important role in educating visitors about railway engineering, industrial heritage, and historical conservation techniques. It provides hands-on learning opportunities for apprentices, volunteers, and engineering enthusiasts who take part in restoration activities and skills training.

Visitor Experience

The building is normally open to visitors on running days and special events. Walkways and viewing areas allow the public to safely observe restoration work and examine locomotives at close range. WEST SHED is designed to be accessible and welcoming, offering shelter and an immersive atmosphere regardless of the weather.

Role Within the Midland Railway Centre - Butterley

WEST SHED is a key part of the wider Swanwick Junction heritage site, working alongside other facilities such as:

  • The main station and platform areas
  • Workshops and locomotive servicing points
  • Signal boxes and traditional railway infrastructure

Together, these facilities help the Midland Railway Centre - Butterley preserves and demonstrate the working practices of the steam and early diesel railway era in an authentic, operational setting.

Future Development

WEST SHED continues to evolve as restoration standards improve and new projects are undertaken. Plans often include improved exhibition lighting, interpretive displays, and upgraded workshop facilities, ensuring that the shed remains a vital and active part of heritage railway preservation well into the future.
