80098 - BR Standard Tank

BR Standard Class 4MT Tank – No. 80098

Built by Brighton Works in December 1954, 80098 belongs to the BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4T family — a class developed for suburban and secondary services under the R. A. Riddles standard locomotive programme. During its working life, 80098 was initially assigned to Plaistow (33A), operating commuter services on the London, Tilbury & Southend (LT&S) lines.

Following withdrawal, 80098 was sold to a scrapyard in January 1966, where it remained until November 1984, when the 80080 Locomotive Holdings Group purchased it, initially intending to use it for spare parts. By August 1998, 33 years after its last steam run under BR, 80098 steamed again in preservation.

Design & Purpose

The BR Standard 4MT tanks were designed to be versatile and efficient, combining good power with rapid turnaround capability. Their tank-engine configuration meant that they could work in either direction without needing to be turned, making them ideal for suburban and branch line work. They gained a reputation for reliability and smooth running, especially on passenger duties.

Service History

80080 spent its BR career working suburban and regional services, starting life on the London, Tilbury and Southend line, followed by time in Shropshire, Central and North Wales. It remained in service until 1965, by which time steam was being phased out across the British Railways network. Following withdrawal it resided at Barry Scrapyard before, the locomotive was saved and entered preservation.

Preservation

Following withdrawal from BR, 80098 was bought by Woodhams scrapyard Barry and was purchased from there for preservation and eventually restored to full working order to mainline standard. The locomotive has travelled to most parts of England and Wales on mainline duties and has also visited several preserved lines. It is currently being overhauled as the locomotive was in need of a new boiler, which is being completely being rebuilt at HBSS Liverpool.

Highlights & Notable Moments

  • Has spent much time on the mainline often twinned with sister locomotive 80079
  • Has often worked on her old stamping ground in central Wales
  • Representative example of the final generation of British steam design
  • Formerly a regular performer on enthusiast and passenger trains
  • Currently receiving overhaul attention for future operation

Current Condition

80098 is currently out of service and undergoing overhaul at The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust. Once restoration work is complete, it is expected to rejoin the active steam fleet and return to hauling passenger services on a heritage railway.
